Editing and Omar reshoot

24/2/10
Today we uploaded the blackness footage Youssef filmed and the establishing shots of the graffiti and buildings. Bethany made these into a sequence of fades for the introduction of the film. Alex and Youssef finished the questionnaire and handed it out to 5 people to complete, they aimed for a mixed group of people to get a wider range of answers.
We had a half day so we went to Omars to reshoot two scenes that we didn't like from the previous time we filmed there. It all worked out fine and we will upload that footage tomorrow.

Editing

23/2/10
Today Bethany worked on editing in the lesson and Alex and Youssef worked on the blog and the questionnaire. The editing is going well, we made some of the footage black and white and added a flash effect like a camera, Bethany added a camera shutter sound effect using garage band to the footage and it has all worked nicely. Youssef filmed some footage with the lens cap on the camera so its just darkness which we will use for some of the fading shots.

Sunset take 2 footage

Bethany uploaded the sunset footage onto the computer and sped the hour long take to shorten it down to six seconds. We are really happy with the way the shot turned out the transition from light to dark works better than we could have hoped and the lights coming on in peoples houses made it quite magical. This shot will be prefect for the opening shot to our movie as it sets the time for the stabbing in the next scene and shows the audience its the end of our protagonists day, it also creates anticipation for what is coming next.

Alex and Bethany then uploaded the rest of our footage shot over half term and began editing, so far it is going well however there are some scenes at Omar's house we need to reshoot this week.

Sunset Take 2

21/2/2010
As said before, we feel the sunset shots we previously did were not as successful as we would have liked them to be, and therefore decided to re-shoot. Alex and Youssef went to the Cambridge estate again and set up in a similar location, however this time facing the other way to avoid the glare from the sunlight which may have been a problem previously. However, as it was cloudy and sometimes raining, we are unsure how successful the footage has been. The tape had run out towards the end of the filming and therefore we may still have to film the establishing shot once again.

Thursday 18 February 2010

These two videos are the beginning of Sam Mendes' American Beauty. This film influenced the opening to our film with the disequilibrium where the middle of the film comes at the beginning. We also have been influenced by their framing and camera work, and how the audience are in a position of privilege over the main protagonist because we know what is going to happen to them before they do.

Garage/Carpark

08/2/2010
We continued to reshoot previous footage on the HD camera and went back to the garage/carpark we went to on the 10th to reshoot some shots of the graffiti walls and the point of view spiral staircase shot. We filmed Anthony through a gap in the wall from above to continue on with the travelling sequence after the stab scene.

Sunset

17/2/2010
Bethany and Youssef went to the Cambridge estate again with the idea of filming a scene going continuously from day to night. They set up the Camera in a location we have used previously and filmed for 40 minutes solidly the sun setting. They set up the framing using the rule of thirds, a concrete playground tunnel to the left of the frame, the sunset in the centre of the frame and buildings on the right side of the frame. The shooting was successful however we feel like we want to do it again when so we have two attempts to choose from.

Cambridge Estate

15/2/2010
We decided to reshoot all our previous footage that we did on the old camera with the new HD camera to add to the quality. We went to the cambridge estate to shoot some establishing shots of the buildings and did a CCTV styled shot from up on a balcony. We went to a friends house on the Cambridge estate and took a shot of Anthony walking out her front door and down the balcony walkway. Due to previously shooting similar footage we feel that doing it again has improved the quality and we have corrected the framing.

Omar's House

14/2/2010
We went to a friends house to reshoot the bedroom scene. We felt Omar's room would work better for our film because it was messier and more cluttered and run down. The bed was a matress and there were plug sockets hanging from the walls so the mise-en-scene worked a lot better.

We bought a toothbrush before we got there so we could film the bathroom scenes in a mirror and we brought Bethany's alarm clock as well as extra props such as cigarettes, beer cans etc to add to the mise-en-scene. Overall the visit was very successful.

The Stabbing

10/02/10
We went to Surbiton to a location Anthony suggested, a narrow dark alleyway lit by street lamps, which we believed fit the atmosphere for Anthony's stabbing really well. During the filming process we used the new expensive camera for the first time which caused some difficulties. We got the camera out at first and it started snowing so we packed up and waited for an hour, then we unpacked it again and it started to snow again so we had to cover the camera and wait, eventually the snow went away and we could start. We tried to close off both ends of the alleyway so no one would get in the shot, and so that Anthony and his killers were alone making the atmosphere more tense. We believe that this would add to the fear of the scene. Also we tried to create a build up to the stabbing, getting closer and closer to anthony to try and create excitement for the audience.

We used another actor to play Anthony's murder, he was a black teenager, we used him because we found through researching other films such as AdULTHOOD and the news we felt that knife crime in London involved black people more then white people. We also used Youssef as the murderer to see who looked best. We tried to do a point of view shot of the murderer stabbing Anthony, but we found it difficult to do this and hold the camera steady.
We then tried to do an over the shoulder shot of another person as the murder with his hood up so that the audiance does not know who the murderer is, trying to keep the audience in suspense through out the rest of the film.

The Garage/Car park

08/02/10
We went to a car park in Raynes park, and took shots of graffiti walls as it all fits in with our genre and the mise-en-scene worked really well. We also experimented with shots of Anthony walking past the graffiti and down stairs in the car park and travelling around for the scenes are the stabbing.

We tested with different kinds of shots, as he was walking down the stairs we tried to follow his foot steps but it was too shaky. We then tried to get it from Anthony's point of view and felt it worked better, because it makes the audience feel like they are traveling with the main protagonist.

Feed the fish edits

3/2/2010
Today we finished editing the "Feed The Fish" sequence, and uploaded it onto youtube. It was a good learning process for us, as we learnt how to use diffrent shots in practice rather than in lesson discussion. We also learnt how to edit clips and add effects. However, we noticed some flaws with our preliminary task, which we see as a learning experience as we now know not to make the same mistakes in our final opening sequence.
The mistakes we made were only minor they were things such as almost crossing the line in youssefs (henchman) entry into the office, we would have made the shot more accurate and gone further to the right. We also jump cut from the close up of the feed the fish door sign to the over the shoulder shot of youssef walking through the door. We decided if we were to do this task again we would discard the tracking shot of youssef walking to his chair and replace it with an elipsis shot of him sitting straight into the chair.
For the first three opening shots we decided to use an elipsis shot from youssef (henchman) walking into the building straight to him walking up the stairs as it took up less dead time and the audience would easily understand this sequence.
We added special effects on imovie to youssef looking back scene to show effectively that we are looking into a past event.

Have You Fed The Fish filming

27/01/10
We had a double lesson today so we spent the two hours filming our preliminary task 'Have You Fed The Fish?' in a free classroom we booked yesterday. Youssef played the henchman, Bethany played the business man and Alex played the victim. We plan to edit all the shots together later in the week.

Bedroom filming

30/01/10
We went to a friends house and filmed the anthony scenes of him indoors and the sequence for after the murder section. We also spoke to the guy whose house we were at about music for our opening as he makes tracks with no copyright which fit our film genre. We found the alley way and experimented with the walking shots from behind for the stabbing scene using stop motion.

The Adventure Begins

24/01/10
After the brief planning we did over the last two days, we went to look for locations suitable for our opening. We were looking for plenty of concrete buildings and a rough looking area, and decided to go to Kingsnypton and Cambridge Estate. We took alot of photos to work with later, and in the Cambridge Estate we started to film some location shots for the beginning of our piece. Afterwards, we went to the garages behind a deserted street where we found empty garages and graffiti on the walls, and once again took pictures and filmed.
Here are some examples of what we took.
